7 Winter Driving Tips for New Mexico

by admin on April 6, 2010

New Mexico is indeed the land of enchantment. However, winter storms can kill the unwary that are traveling. Exercise these tips to support stay apt.

Winter Driving Tip #1

Slow down. Many of New Mexico’s roads are winding and twisted through high mountain ranges. Even on the lower desert areas, bridges and black ice can catch you off guard. So, slow down to stay safe.

Winter Driving Tip #2

Be prepared. One of the best ways to survive Recent Mexico’s winter storms is to be prepared. Check that your tires are properly inflated even before the snow starts to fall. Make sure your fuel tank is a minimum of half full at all times and judge packing a few survival things to leave in your car. Some recommended items would include: a scraper and brush, minute shovel, jumper cables, tow chain and a bag of sand or cat litter for tire traction. Also include road flares, a blanket, heavy boots, warm clothing and a flashlight with batteries. Support an emergency survival kit in the car, including high-energy food such as a chocolate bar or energy bar.

Winter Driving Tip #3

During the storm, you need to have your lights on low. This will point your headlights towards the pavement and provide you with the most optimal assistance you can get while traveling. An added benefit is that other drivers will be more likely to see you than if your lights are off.

Winter Driving Tip #4

If your car was parked outside, be sure to positive away all snow from the hood, windows and front grill. This will prevent huge chunks from flying at you from the grill while you are trying to concentrate on the road. You also want to be sure your windows provide you with the best visibility available and that your headlights are not covered.

Winter Driving Tip #5

Do your best to not travel alone. There is safety when more than one set of eyes is watching for hazards during a storm. It is best to wait out the storm, but sometimes circumstances require travel. If you must move, and no one can go with you, take a fully charged cell phone. Even if you have to borrow one, have some form of communications with you.

Winter Driving Tip #6

If you start to skid, remain calm. Lift your foot off of the gas pedal and steer the car in the direction you want to go. If your vehicle has an Anti-locking Breaking System, (ABS) do not pump your brakes. Instead, apply right, firm pressure to your brake pedal.

Winter Driving Tip #7

If you find yourself stranded, halt calm and end put. You will found faster if you are with your vehicle and it is very easy to get lost, even in familiar terrain, during a major snow storm. So, discontinue put. Run your engine for heat about once every hour and be sure the exhaust pipe is clear to prevent carbon monoxide inside your car. One survival piece of equipment that has not been mentioned is a candle. A single candle can keep the interior of a vehicle warm enough to prevent hypothermia . Also, tie a quick-witted cloth to your car’s antenna to signal for assistance.

Beneficial luck and discontinue safe driving during the winter in New Mexico.
